Policy and Advocacy Compensation Schemes Update September 2024
OTA Meeting with WorkCover WA: Updates on Fee Changes
OTA recently met with the CEO of WorkCover WA to address our concerns regarding the recent amendments to travel and reporting fees for occupational therapists under Schedule 7 of the Workers Compensation (Health Services) Fee Order 2024. The changes include a reduction in the travel fee (from $219 per hour to $177.35 per hour) and the introduction of a flat fee of $111 for report writing (previously incorporated into consultation fees). These concerns were informed by feedback from our members through a recent survey.
-
Travel Fees: WorkCover WA has confirmed that occupational therapists may request higher travel remuneration from the relevant insurer on a case-by-case basis if they find that the current rate does not adequately cover travel costs. OTA encourages members who experience unreasonable refusals from insurers to reach out to us at policy@otaus.com.au.
-
Report Fees: OTA is continuing to actively advocate for fairer report fee structures.
Additionally, WorkCover WA has announced a 4.41% indexation of allied health fees, effective 1 November 2024. This adjustment will increase the initial consultation fee from $148 to $154.53 and the subsequent consultation fee from $115 to $119.07.
Queensland’s Workers’ Compensation and Other Legislation Amendment Act 2024
Last year, the Queensland Government published the final report of an independent review of the state’s workers’ compensation scheme, which occurs every five years. OTA engaged considerably with the Queensland Government to inform their response to the review.
Based on the review’s recommendations, the Workers' Compensation and Rehabilitation and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2024 was passed on 22 August 2024, taking effect the following day. The new laws expand the scope of cancers deemed work-related for Queensland firefighters and improve early intervention and support to prevent secondary mental injuries in workers. More information is available on WorkSafe Queensland’s website.
WorkCover Queensland has also updated the Return to Work Services Table of Costs, which includes:
-
Increased transparency of WorkCover's alignment with the principles of practice for workplace rehabilitation providers and professional standards for return-to-work services.
-
A new item code for Workplace Facilitated Discussions.
-
An updated descriptor for the Return to Work Facilitation code.
The updated fee publication effective is available on WorkCover’s website under Current allied health fees.
