Important Update for ACT Members: New Mandatory Medical Reporting Requirements for Heavy Vehicle Drivers
Transport Canberra and City Services (TCCS) has finalised regulations introducing mandatory medical reporting requirements for certain health practitioners, including occupational therapists, on a patient’s fitness to drive heavy vehicles.
Here’s what you need to know:
- The regulations will take effect on 12 June 2025, though an earlier start date may be set
- Registered practitioners in occupational therapy, medicine, optometry, physiotherapy, or psychology must report if they believe a patient with a heavy vehicle licence (or one applying for it) has a long-term or permanent condition likely to impair their ability to drive safely
- The amendment can be viewed in the ACT Legislation Register, under section 90B.
Guidelines to support practitioners will be developed in early 2025. In the meantime, visit TCCS’s website or contact TCCS_RoadTransportRegulation@act.gov.au with any queries.
